Learn How to Use a Garbage Disposal Properly

In this article, we are going to show you how to use a garbage disposal the right way so that it lasts longer and you’ll have fewer repair problems.

Your garbage disposal is one of the most used appliances in your kitchen and one of the most abused.

If you’re not taking care of it properly you can shorten its life which could be very costly.

Most of the time when homeowners have a blockage in their disposal It’s because they’ve have put a bunch of food down the disposal and turned it on.

DO NOT OVERLOAD: Always cut large food items into smaller pieces and feed into the garbage disposal slowly one piece at a time.

You should never try to shoot a whole bunch of food through the disposal unit all at one time.

Also, always let cold water run at least 15 seconds before and after you turn on your garbage disposal.

The cold water helps keep the motor cool but also aids in the flow of the food debris to more easily run down the drain.

As you turn on the unit start by feeding the unit with small bits of food at a time until all the food is gone.

When you’re done feeding all the food down the disposal continue to let the cold water run for about 15 – 30 seconds to get the remaining food down the drain.

When it’s time to buy a new garbage disposal do some quick math.

If you plan on living in your house at least 5 years it’s probably worth investing in a high-end model.

A high-end model is more powerful, much quieter and it will likely last 10 -15 years or longer.

If you’re replacing a garbage disposal it’s best left to professionals unless it’s a job you feel you have the expertise to complete.

If you’re replacing an existing garbage disposal a plumber or a handyman should be able to take care of it.

If you’re installing a new one you’re going to have to hire professionals to do both the plumbing and the wiring.

Only Put in the Right Types of Food

You should always remember that your garbage disposal is not a trash bin.

Make sure you only put the proper types of food in your disposal unit.

The safe bet is to only place food down the disposal that is of an organic material like fruits and vegetables.

You don’t want to put the hard part of lettuce or certain fruit and vegetable stems.

Do not grind up the fruit pits in your disposal.

Other Useful Garbage Disposal Tips

cold water and citrus peels

To help keep your blades sharp periodically grind up ice cubes in your disposal.

The ice cubes do a couple of things.

They not only sharpen the garbage disposal blades but they also help to remove oils and grease that may have built up inside the garbage disposal over time.

When using your garbage disposal it’s very important that you never stick you hand inside the hole.

If you do have to clear something that has fallen down the disposal turn off your circuit breaker first before clearing any objects.

Dawn dishwashing soap and cold water will aid in keeping your garbage disposal smelling clean.

We also suggest that you periodically drop in some lemon, lime or orange peels down the disposal.

The citrus peels will not only help to clear excess debris that may be lodged in the disposal but also help to eliminate any unpleasant odors.
