Getting a Handle on a Smelly Toilet
What’s the biggest problem in your house related to the toilet?
The Smell. Absolutely the worst!
Many of you have even contacted us saying that “my toilet smells even after cleaning, what can I do?”
We don’t have to get into all the details of why your toilet gives off a strong and unpleasant odor but many time the smell can be directly linked to the male species in your home.
You take your floral sprays and try to cover it up but what you’re really doing is taking one smell and covering it with another smell.
If you’re like us the perfuming smells make our eyes water plus it doesn’t solve your problem.
Today we’re going a few solutions on how to solve the problem of a stinky toilet despite your cleaning.
Solution #1 – Stale Water In Toilet Tank
- Waterproof latex gloves
- Scrubbing pad
- Spray bottle filled with bleach
One possible cause of toilet smells is caused by stagnant water that sits in the tank.
A lot of times, you will find this happens in places where the water is hard.
The tank holds the water for the toilet and when it’s not flushed very often the water goes stale.
The stale water creates an odor in the tank and when you flush it goes into the toilet bowl which then fills the room.
Steps to Clean
- Step 1 – shut off the water to the toilet which is usually located on one of the sides. Turn the valve to the off position.
- Step 2 – remove the tank’s lid and gently place it to the side so that it doesn’t crack.
- Step 3 – flush the toilet to remove all of the water out of the tank.
- Step 4 – take your spray bottled that is filled with bleach and spray it into the tank. Be sure to saturate the entire area with bleach.
- Step 5 – take your scrubbing pad and scrub the inside of the tank. Make sure you don’t put your head directly over the tank because the bleach smell could make you sick.
- Step 6 – after you’ve finished cleaning the inside of the tank you can turn the water back on. Make sure you turn the water back on slowly so you don’t rupture anything inside the tank or the fill line.
- Step 7 – gently pick up the tank’s lid and put it back in place.
- Step 8 – flush the toilet to test if that eliminated the smell.
You might have to repeat this process a couple of times to make sure you get all the smell out.
Toilet Odor Removal
Bad Air Sponge
Bad Air Sponge is a unique product that has been around since 1952 and it’s an odor eliminator, not an air freshener.
An odor eliminator helps get to the source of the problem and eliminate it but an air freshener further agitates the smell.
You don’t want to add a “good” smell on top of the odor you’ve already got.
Bad Air Sponge is an industry proven odor control on the market today. It provides ultimate indoor bathroom air quality while being safe for the environment and your family.
It’s one of the few products that removes odor causing molecules at its source reducing pollutants to the air rather than adding pollutants.
You’ll be able to get rid of all your candles, beads, sprays, air fresheners and gel imitators.
All of these products just mask the problem and you can tell by all the ridiculous fragrance and heavy perfumes most people don’t like anyway.
In the disaster restoration industry, it’s actually used for fire damage.
It even pulls and eliminates odor-causing molecules from porous materials like walls, furniture, and carpets.
If it’s used after fire disasters it should really work after your cigar smoking during the game, cooking odors from the kitchen and those smelly “boy” bathrooms.
It’s also used to combat mildew after damage from floods or water damage from firefighting equipment.
Bad Air Sponge is also used in kennels, dog shows, and pet hospitals so it’s safe for your pets and their particular odors.
Place it in your bathroom near your toilet.
Just remove the lid and forget it along with the odors. No electricity, batteries or messy powders.
There’s nothing for your pets or children to get into. It has over 50 years of a proven track record in the industry.
Here are some of the other areas in which it can be used:
- Toilet areas
- Laundry rooms
- Fitness area
- Refrigerator and Freezers

Another odor eliminator that we would also recommend is Ozium Gel Eliminator.
The Ozium spray was originally developed to combat airborne germs and bacteria in hospitals and healthcare facilities.
The Ozium Gel Eliminator eliminates offensive odors so it would be a perfect addition to any bathroom.
It grabs and neutralizes foul odors at the molecular level. These gels are easy to use plus you can control the amount of scent.
The last odor eliminator for the bathroom that we’d like to mention is Odoban Deodorizer and Disinfectant.
Odoban Deodorizer and Disinfectant
Odoban cleans, sanitizes, disinfects and deodorizes all in one product.

It’s available in original Eucalyptus and Lavender scent.

There are not many products on the market, that we are aware of, that disinfects in 10 minutes, sanitizes in 60 seconds while also eliminating odors and freshening the air with a clean pleasant scent.
Use Air Purifiers to Improve Bathroom Air Circulation
If your bathroom is the source of unpleasant odors and noxious fumes due largely to poor air circulation you may need a more an air purifier.
Adding more windows or installing a venting system may be completely out of the question or not within your budget.
We’re going to assume that you’ve already cleaned the inside of your tank and you’ve tried of the recommended odor eliminators but the odor is still lingering.
One of the best ways to attack the wafting smells in your small bathroom is a bathroom air purifier.
We did some snooping around for you and here’s what we found.
Germ Guardian GG1000
The Germ Guardian GG1000 UV Air Sanitizer and Odor Eliminator sanitizes and kills over 99% of germs with U-VC light.
It’s great for small places like bathrooms and sells for around $35. It does have a filter inside that will need to be replaced every couple of months so that’s an added cost you will need to consider.
It plugs directly into the wall using an AC adapter. The air gets sucked into the unit from the grill at the top and it leaves at the bottom.
The Germ Guardian has a faint light along the top so it will sort of acts as a night light as well.
Overall the build quality is solid.
You will hear a bit of sound when you plug it in so if you’re a light sleeper and plan to put this anywhere other than your bathroom this is something to consider.
Holmes HEPA Desktop Air Purifier
The Holmes HEPA Desktop Air Purifier comes highly recommended.
It’s designed to be used in small spaces and to trap air particles quickly.
As air passes through the filters dust, smoke, odors, and allergens go in but don’t come out.
If you can’t tolerate any kind of fan noise this might not be the air purifier for you because it definitely has some noise.
The last one we’d like to share with you is the Honeywell HHT-011 Compact Air Purifier offers low maintenance with effective air cleaning. It’s also designed to be used in small rooms like a bathroom.
It has a permanent filter so you never have to replace the filter inside the unit.
It has a 3-stage air filtration system that will help clean the air in your bathroom.
You can also use the optional ionizer feature which helps boost the performance of the air purifier and helps freshen the air.
It has a LED light on top that acts as a nightlight so in a dark bathroom you’ll be able to see the controls very easily.
There’s also an LED-indicator light letting you know when it’s time to clean the filter.
The pre-filter can be removed and washed under water.
The HEPA filter can also be easily removed and vacuumed with a vacuum cleaner attachment.

Desiccants Help Remove Moisture Your Bathroom
If your have lingering smells that you simply can’t get rid of a desiccant may be your solution.
It will help remove the moisture that can be the culprit with some of your smell issues.
DampRid Moisture Absorber is one that we like.
It’s easy to use and environmentally friendly plus the 10.5-ounce bucket size can be refilled. It lasts up to 45 days and it ideal for bathrooms 250 square feet or smaller.
It will help protect against mold, mildew, and musty odors.
You can use DampRid in your bathroom, kitchen, closet, gym locker, laundry room, bedroom, closet, RV or anywhere excess moisture or stagnant air is a problem.
How To Use Damp Rid
- Remove the lid.
- Open the plastic bag.
- Pour the moisture absorbent formula into the container.
- Place near your toilet on a flat and stable surface.
DampRid Works In 3 Phases
- Phase 1 – It absorbs the excess moisture out of the air and collects it in the upper chamber fo the container.
- Phase 2 – The excess moisture dissolves the moisture absorbing formula and collects in the lower chamber which prevents the unwanted moisture from returning to the air.
- Phase 3 – When the moisture absorbing formula has fully dissolved the bottom chamber is filled with liquid. You can pour the liquid into the toilet and flush. Raise the toilet seat before pouring
Now refill the container to 1-inch below the top using the refill bag and return the container to it’s location beside your toilet.
Silica Gel Desiccants
There’s also Silica Gel Desiccants.
You’ve probably seen silica gel packets in purses, shoe boxes, beef jerky, and pill bottles with explicit warnings not to consume.
Well, those little packets collect moisture on its surface. One tiny silica ball can hold almost 40% of its weight in water.
It keeps things very dry.
To make your own DIY desiccant get a plastic container and place the small packets of silica inside. Poke some holes in the top of the container and you’re done.
The next time you buy something with silica bags in them don’t throw them away.
Getting Rid of Lingering Pee Smells
All urine from mammals, whether humans or pets contain uric acid crystals which are very hard to remove.
Products like bleach and deodorizers mask the scent and hide it for awhile but the crystals will still be there and the urine scent will return.
The best way to get rid of the crystals and the smell for good is to use a cleaner that contains enzymes that are designed to attack and break down the crystals.
Nature’s Miracle is a product we like.
When using the product be sure to read the directions because you need to give the enzymes enough time to penetrate the surface and break down the crystals.
When you spray the product on the surface you’ll need to leave the room for several hours before cleaning again.
This gives the enzymes enough time to get their work done.
Homemade All Natural Recipe
- Damp cloth
- Spray bottle
- Fresh lemon juice
- Baking soda
- Old toothbrush
- Distilled white vinegar
Combine the ingredients in the manner described in the photo.
Be sure to not only clean both sides of the toilet but you also want to wash the walls, the caulk, the cabinets, the floor and behind the toilet.
Be certain to clean the area where the mounting bolts are located.
It’s not a bad idea to remove the mounting bolts so you can remove the toilet seat and clean underneath because overspray loves to hang out there.
An old toothbrush is an excellent tool to use to help you get inside those small areas.
This homemade product will help eliminate the smell of urine and other unpleasant odors in your bathroom.
Other Cleaning Tips
- Clean your toilets, bathroom floors and walls once a week.
- Close the lid when you flush this helps prevent unwanted particles from becoming airborne.
